The marriage of chocolate and hazelnuts can be traced back to early 19th century Turin, Italy. During that time, cocoa imports were strained due to Napoleonic France blocking neutral countries from trading with the British. Chocolatiers in Italy utilized the regional hazelnuts to mix in with their remaining chocolate resources, creating gianduja. The name Gianduja was a character of the time in carnivals and marionette characters, representing a person native to the Piedmont area.
